About this worksheet

Grammar and vocabulary practice for 1st to 3rd grade: plural nouns (including -es, -ies and irregular plurals), contractions, compound words, antonyms, synonyms, past tense verbs, rhyming words and counting syllables. Each sheet picks a new set of words and has an answer key.

Tips for parents and teachers

  • Say each answer in a spoken sentence to check that it sounds right.
  • For syllables, put a hand under the chin: it drops once for each syllable.
  • Keep a class or family list of 'tricky' plurals and past tense verbs as they come up.
  • Some opposites and synonyms have more than one good answer: accept any that fits.
